01 / The device

A machine that performs time.

Al-Jazari’s Elephant Clock combines a water timer with a sequence of moving figures. A bowl concealed inside the elephant slowly fills. At the end of the interval, a released ball sets the visible performance in motion.

The treatise belongs to al-Jazari’s work around 1206. The two manuscript pages reproduced here are later witnesses, both dated 715 AH / 1315 CE. Their dates describe the paper artifacts—not the manufacture date of an extant clock.

The Met’s description records a bird signal, a ball entering a dragon’s mouth and the driver striking the elephant at half-hour intervals. See the manuscript record.

The evidence behind the reconstruction.

The manuscript folios guide the clock’s appearance. The ewer and wooden panel are period comparisons. Their materials are documented by the museum; applying those materials to a particular clock component remains an interpretation.

Primary visual witness

The Elephant Clock

The principal visual anchor for the elephant, howdah, figures, birds and dragons. A painted page can establish appearance and relationships, but it cannot establish a precise alloy or a hidden joint.

Design for an Elephant Clock

A second folio from the same dated manuscript tradition. It supplies a comparison for the elephant and driver. It is not treated as an independent measurement of the lost machine.

Period material comparison

Ewer, about 1180–1210

A surviving example of elaborate brasswork close to al-Jazari’s lifetime. It establishes a period comparison for worked and decorated metal, not evidence that this workshop made the clock.

Carved wooden panel

A medieval example of carved ebony from Egypt. It shows the sophistication of period woodwork; it does not establish the timber species or construction of the Elephant Clock.

03 / Materials & making

Copper, brass, timber and color.

The model now separates the response of worked metal, matte paint, timber and cloth to light. Fine tool marks, surface variation and visible assembly edges suggest a made object. The surfaces are original digital materials, not photographs or scans of a surviving Elephant Clock.

ComponentMaterial shownWhat supports itWhat remains uncertain
Elephant casingWorked copperA proposed copper construction, informed by the wider copper-alloy tradition documented in open analytical research. This is not a verified original material specification.Exact alloy, sheet thickness, joining method, coating and surface color.
Water bowl and fittingsCopper bowl; brass vessel and fittingsCopper-alloy vessel making is established in period objects and the open analytical study below. The precise alloy and finish of each clock part have not been verified from a complete primary technical reading.
Howdah and upper cabinetTimber with painted and metal detailsThe folio supplies the architecture; the carved panel supplies a period comparison for woodworking. The wooden construction is inferred. No specific timber species is claimed.
Axles and small pivotsDark ironA mechanical material choice for this digital interpretation. Not independently established for these individual axles.
Dragons, birds and figuresMatte colored surfaces and metal detailsColor and iconography are visible in the manuscript.Paint on paper does not identify the machine’s pigment, binder or substrate. Names such as “lapis” or “vermilion” are deliberately not asserted.
Saddle covering and cordsWoven textile and natural-fiber cordThe covering is a visual interpretation; cord is used to explain the transmission. No claim is made for silk, wool, flax or hemp specifically. Some historical connections may require chains rather than cord.
Tusks and pale detailsPale painted finishAn economical visual interpretation of the illustrated forms.Ivory is not established. Pale color alone is not evidence of ivory.

“Period material” and “original material of this clock” are different claims. There is no material analysis of an original Elephant Clock in the evidence assembled here. Decorative seams, studs and surface wear are reconstruction choices, not recorded archaeological observations.

04 / The half-hour sequence

From water to movement.

01 / Measure

A bowl slowly fills

Water enters a perforated bowl in the elephant’s concealed vessel. Its descent supplies the timing input. The animation compresses the interval.

02 / Transmit

A connection pulls

The sinking bowl acts through a transmission toward the upper release. The viewer exposes a proposed arrangement of cords and pulleys.

03 / Release

A ball leaves the tower

A single demonstration ball travels from the falcon area to the left dragon. The historical alternating distributor is simplified.

04 / Reset

The dragon tips

The added ball weight turns the dragon. The bowl is lifted and tilted in the demonstration to explain the reset relationship.

05 / Announce

The figures perform

The driver moves and the crown bird turns. These motions make the passage of an interval visible. Sound production is not simulated.

06 / Prepare

The mechanism is ready again

The ball remains in a receiver. Restarting the viewer resets the presentation; it does not depict an automatic return of balls to the magazine.

The public-domain folio establishes the performance. Internal routing and the detailed timing remain an explanatory hypothesis. See the component inventory for part-level notes.

05 / Evidence & limits

What this model can—and cannot—show.

Grounded in sources

The author, dated manuscript witnesses, illustrated arrangement, figures and half-hour performance have identifiable sources. Museum catalogue records provide artifact dimensions, accession numbers, media, credit lines and image rights.

Reconstructed here

Depth, dimensions, internal component positions, seams, paint finishes, material assignments and ornament have been interpreted in three dimensions. The new material maps reproduce plausible light response, not measured chemical composition.

Not yet mechanically validated

The bowl is keyframed; buoyancy, filling rate and fluid behavior are not solved. Cords do not obey a tension model. The reserve ball supply does not decrement, and the next alternating interval, hour-window indexing, whistle and full release internals remain incomplete.

The overall form is still a reconstructed model. Higher surface detail should not be mistaken for higher certainty. This is not a conservation record, manufacturing drawing or a claim of exact historical replication.
